WHAT IS A PUBLIC IVY?
The term Public Ivy first appeared as the title of a 1985 book by Richard Moll. The book, Public Ivy's: A Guide to America's Best Public Undergraduate Colleges and Universities, describes eight universities that provide “an Ivy League collegiate experience at a public school price." Public Ivies are considered, according to the Journal of Higher Education, to be capable of "successfully competing with the Ivy League schools in academic rigor...”
Miami is among these original eight public ivies, the only university from Ohio so designated, and is later included in Greene’s Guides “The Public Ivies: America’s Flagship Pubic Universities, which expanded the number of universities distinguished by region.
